The biodiesel is made from waste vegetable oil gratefully received from the island’s restaurants. The biodiesel is made by volunteers and fuels Gertie, Gabriola’s community bus. The biodiesel is now part of the Sustainable Energy Cooperative. If you are interested in joining the energy cooperative please email us at info@islandfutures.ca.
A by-product of making biodiesel is glycerin. We are turning this into Glean, a liquid soap.
Island Futures created the Biodiesel report: biofuel_report
This report looked at the feasibility of creating biodiesel out of waste vegetable oil on Gabriola. In 2016 plans were initiated to put in place a biodiesel system on Gabriola. The majority of biodiesel is provided to Gertie, the community bus. Some is also available to residents of Gabriola island.
